Architecture, Class & Character – A Closer Look at Berlin’s Urban Fabric
Conceived at the drawing board in the early 1900s, Schöneberg exemplifies what is called the “Berliner Mischung”. With every large house a microcosm of its own: You have the Bel-Etage in the front building where upper-class families would live, stores on the ground floor, in the side wings the cramped quarters of large working-class families and trade businesses and horse stables in the courtyard. Today many of the commercial lofts are turned into apartments and the Bel-Etages, with often incredibly rich architectural details, are sold-off. And with some luck one can even find a former store with the original historic basement vaults attached. Doesn´t that sound like some real playroom fun to you?
