I'm Matthias Moever – interior architect, project coordinator, fetish community insider, and passionate designer of tailor-made living concepts. Since the late 1980s, I’ve been living and working in Berlin, a city that continues to inspire my work with its bold energy, rich architecture, and diverse subcultures.
My background? I studied and later taught Industrial- and Surface Design at the University of the Arts Berlin, spending over 15 years as a lecturer and guest professor. During that time, I collaborated with design icons like Dame Vivienne Westwood. But eventually, I traded academia for hands-on transformation.
It all began when a friend from London asked me to convert an old neighborhood bar into a premium offering in the Berlin guest apartment market. It now runs under one of the world’s top fetish brands: TheHoistBasements. From sourcing the right property to coordinating every detail of the build – I realized I had found my true profession.
Since then, I’ve transformed old tool shops into elegant playgrounds, discovered trapdoors that led to forgotten cellars, and reimagined Berlin lofts as intimate, industrial sanctuaries. Some projects take six months and six figures. Others turn a modest ground-floor space into something unexpected.
What they all have in common? A bold idea. A clear aesthetic. And the understanding that design is deeply personal – especially when it breaks with convention.
Today, I work with clients from Berlin and around the world who seek something different: masculine, discreet, functional, or simply fabulous. Many come from the LGBTQ+ and fetish communities. Others just appreciate strong, character-driven design.
